Its the first time in many years where my relatives decided to skip my household on the 2nd day of the new year, which ofcourse is not necessarily a bad thing, but it also means that there will no longer be the usual hustle and bustle of my relatives crowding around and playing cards at home this year. Somehow without that, Chinese New Year felt incomplete.

The first day of CNY was the usual visit my grandpa and get all the angpaos followed by the usual "interrogation" by my aunties on why i don't have a GF as yet, which predictably is followed by my usual answer of "I am too busy for that.". Its the same thing year after year.

2nd day was spent at home sleeping, studying and going for my swim ( to burn off all the BBQ meat and fried foodstuff i had at my grandpa's place the day b 4).

The third day was the most amazing i have ever had! There were a few firsts, let me list them for u:
1. First time i row in a 3G boat in Kallang River!
2. First time i row with the Grey Owl Cub paddle ( blade slightly smaller than the competition grade paddle we usually use)
3. First time i row beside a foreigner!
4. First time a foreigner (non -chinese) greeted me "恭喜发财" in chinese, live some more!
5. First time i carried a 3G boat!
6. First time i get to flip the boat over!
7. First time i think i can row better on my left than my right! ( Although the left side still lacked the power of the right, but i think that will come in due time. :) )

It was truly exciting to be back after so long, in the words of WJ ---- "It seems like it has been a long time..." and i can't agree more. SDBA was unusally quiet on the 3rd day of CNY. Other than NUS, and another poly team i think this was the only other team that was rowing on that day. I could not remember when was the last time i rowed, but it was truly enjoyable and it brought back lots of memories as usual. We did not go beyong Shears bridge but to be back in the middle of Kallang river after such a along time was truly amazing. This image of the surroundings when we are in the middle of the river... its something one will never see or experience unless one is a dragonboater or canoeist (or maybe as a consolation, one can always hop onto the Duck Tour and take a tour of Kallang and Singapore river, but dun expect the boat to stop in the middle of kallang river for you to enjoy the scenery. :P ).

It was a nice 1 hour row, a nice warm up after my long break. The 3 of us tried to blend in by acting as rookies and 2 of us went to the extent as so leave our paddles and live vests at home (i was actually planning on using the SDBA paddle! Can u imagine??? ) but after a while it was more than obvious who was the newbies and who had some experience rowing, but hey, you must give us the benefit of doubt, its really been sometime since we rowed, so our skills may have dwindled to that of a newbie. The sun was kind and we had a cloudy late morning. It was a good exercise and after that we had to transport the boat back to the nursery and flip it over. Then we headed to Suntec to change and had Subway! Finally some healthy food after all the unhealthy CNY goodies.

It was all in all a great day, the only pity is that we did not take any photos for keepsake... haiz. I am still waiting for the day where me and my friends can row together in a boat again. :) I am sure that day will come somehow someway.

After the row I went home to sleep. Was damn tired. Think i "lao liao", cannot row without feeling tired anymore. Later i woke up late evening to rush my appraisal (of myself). Its my first time writing and i think it looks and feels funny, i think asians are not used to this sort of "self-bragging". Remember when we were kids and someone commends us and our parents will go... "No no no, dun say that it will cause him to have a big head, he is not that great....". I think in this society, it no longer pays to be too humble, when its time to brag, go ahead and BRAG! If its right that you or your child for that matter (Pls take note for those planning to have children) to take a compliment, go ahead and receive it! You deserve it, not taking it or watering it down may do more harm than good in the long run.

The fourth day of CNY was Sunday. i spent the morning at home watching the old "Journey to the west" on you-tube. Kinda miss the series, its really a classic. Oh did i mention that i woke up with back pain and muscle soreness in my shoulders??? Think there is no denying the fact that i am no longer young! :( Lunch was spent with Andrew and later coffee at Starbucks with Andrew and YZ. It was a nice chat. Later was home and now here i am writing my blog.

Ok, now that CNY is more or less over, its time to look forward to the next event.... the Ex-rowers-oh-so-sinful-breakfast-at-Tiong-Baru-market gathering! --- consisting of nothing less than the Chwee Quay glistering with oil and the nice nice Chai Tao Quay ( in black or white, but to save ourselves the problem of choosing, think we will just order one of each! haha. :P). Haha. Really looking forward to it! You guys take care and see ya! :)

Happy CNY again!

Regards,
YM

Waiting for the sunrise...

The road to one's deams is often tough and filled with challenges and uncertainty. There will those who are kind enough to provide you with a helping hand and those who give you harsh words and say that those are but the truth. Its discouraging and sometimes painful. Maybe its the truth, maybe it will help me in due time.. i dunno, but i know i will remember them but focused on my goals i will remain... I am glad to have friends who have given me words of encouragement and provided me with opportunities. I truly appreciate their kind intentions. I always remember this phrase "After the storm, comes the sun and the ranbow...". I believe in your darkest hour where you feel most helpless, is the hour where you are put to the test, give up not and you will see the rainbow, the sun in the horizon and be ready to feel its warmth.

Yes there will be pain, tears, anger and fear, but when the Sun rise comes i will be there to smile again. That's me, that's who and what i am.

So i await for the sunrise. :)

So lazy

I'm suppose to be doing one of the following today:

1. Study. ( I have 2 projects, one of which is at current status of 0% completion and a deadline less than a month away.)
2. Go gym to work out ( It has been a week since the last time i set foot in the gym)
3. Prepare for my interview tomorrow.

But guess wat, i slept more than 1/2 the day away and when i thought i would head for the gym after that I decided that since my friend is not going, then i won't go as well.

The passion to gym seems to be starting to die out. Nowadays, it takes an enormous amount of effort for me to do any weight training and i have become highly dependent on the combat and body pump classes to keep me going. This is not gonna be good, i can forsee myself standing infront of the mirror one day and wanting to kick myself for all the laziness.

Even after i concluded that i am not heading for the gym, i am merely filpping papers and chatting over msn.. that is so super unproductive and considering that i only have 1 day free everyweek these days, guess i should treasure it more... maybe that is why i am so bent on squandering it away doing nothing rather than working my butt off like what has been happening everyday of the week. Oh well.... wish me luck for the interview tomorrow and hopefully i will get down to preparing for it soon.

It's all about people.

At this stage of my life, i have come to realise that life is nothing more than about the people around you. Unless you are a hermit dewelling in a cave and deeply ebbed in meditation with the ultimate aim of reaching Maha Prina Nrivana, else you cannot help but depend and interact with the people around you.

Whether its about getting that position you desire, the job/promotion that you have been aiming for, to stay or move on, or even if you can linch that deal that you have invested so much energy and effort, whether your other half decides to spend the rest of his/her life by your side.... its all about whether the other party believes and trusts in your ability or if he/she appreciates your effort and whether there is some magical chemistry between 2 or more people. I have seen small cases erupt to problems of epic proportions just because 2 or more people decide that neither wants to give way and conversely seen big problems reduced till its totally insignificant because the group allows space for negotiation and talks and they are focused on solving the problem... not pushing the blame.

2 years of working life has taught me that screaming the loudest does not necessary mean you will get your way ( which is contrary to what a CIO of a big bank once told the group of us who was in her lecture). You will be surprised at how subtle requests get done faster than loud demands. Sometimes in life, we gotta be flexible, give a little, take a little and when you go the extra mile for someone who appreciates it, you will be surprised that the extra miles can take you a long long way . On the contrary, when you choose to do things your way and your way ONLY, you shut yourself out of a whole lot of open doors and usually it only makes things more difficult as people are less willing to offer solutions.

Someone once offered me these words of wisdom and today i offer it to my friends and those who are reading my daily nonsensical scribbles...

"People do not run away from companies or Jobs, they run away from BOSSES". How true, it is. :)

Its 2008

I wanna Wish everyone a Happy 2008 and may everyone be happy and healthy in 2008!
2008 Crept in while i was sound asleep last night.

This morning woke up with 12 sms unread, after that i rushed off for a 2 hr bodycombat lesson as usual.. I must thank all those who took the time and effort to turn up for the fun row along Kallag river and thank the heavens for the great weather. It really brought back memories of days where rowing still had meaning and the team was really like a family. I would like to thank YZ for all the hardwork and time taken to organize the fun row. The lunch, "Lah Teh" and shopping after the row still retained its magic and it was great being able to find time to sit down and have a nice chat with friends i haven't meet for a long time. I hope that in 2008, we will be able to find more time and situations to come together for such nice gathering.

24th Dec was Christmas eve and we had our christmas gathering as usaual at XH's house but ths year the group was smaller with LY, SH, CY, DW and KS not around. Other than that, the food was still great and we still had lots of fun with the stupid "Cooking Mama" and our silly antics. This year we broke our record and satyed the latest! It was like almost 2a.m. when we lft XH's house! Thankyou XH for hosting us year after year after year and may you find ur desired partner in 2008! :)

After tons of chocolates, turkeys, sweets, photos and presents its time to get back to reality! I gotta lose weight! I must have gained at least 3k.g. from all the food. I had to force myself to go for 2 hrs Body Combat today to burn off some of those carbs and fats. Losing weight is definitely going to feature high in my todo list in 2008.

Its almost time to say goodbye to 2007 and hi to 2008. Lets all hope that 2008 will be a better year for all. :)

Back for the weekend!

Hi all,

Its been a week since i have blogged. Last week was the first part of my ICT, spent a total of 5 days with the people that i spent almost 2 years of my NSF days with... almost 6 years ago. How time flies indeed. It was nice meeting my old platoon mates again but almost everyone looks "rounder" and paler which was in stark contrast to the the NSFs days where everyone was a lot more trim and tanned. There was the usual talk about work and who got married, who already have children and whose wife has just delivered as usual and for those who knew that i was from DB, they asked if i knew any of the 5 that was involved in the unfortunate accident.

After the catching up on the first day, the remaining days were spent doing our IPPT, route march and refreshing our skills like motorbike riding and usage of the equipments that has not changed a bit since the day i ORDed (which is quite 'amazing' considering that its close to a decade since i ORDed.) . Yesterday was our route march and its been a REALLY long time since the platoon did that and ofcourse with all the load some of my friends could not take it and fell back after a few KMs, but everyone was really encouraging and in the end everyone made it back in 1 piece. Next week is gonna be more 'Siong' as we brace ourselves for more challenging trainings. Now i am back to relax for the weekend. :)

Ok, enuff about my ICT, i think i gotta draw up a list of stuff to buy for this year end. So here it is:
1. New pair of running shoes. Really need a good pair to cushion all the impact of my runs.
2. Re-encase my amulet which got soaked in my sweat when i went incamp. Gonna make the casing waterproof this time round.
3. Stuff for mummy and Daddy. Still have no idea what to buy for mum, but aiming the anti-snoring pillow from OSIM for daddy so that he can sleep better.
4. New clothes ??? I am not so sure about this, i having less and less time for myself these days and even when i have time i hardly go anywhere else other than the gym. I might KIV this till next year.
5. Gift for my friend who will be leaving for thailand next year.

Guess, that's it. It only about less than 10 items but with the inflation and holiday season around, i will not be surprised that it burns off about 1/2 my bonus or so. BUT, on a better note, its my very first BONUS! YAY! After a freaking horrible time in my first company that i left without my gratituity (cos it was so bad the $$ did not looks significant enough for me to stay on) so this is the first i am getting my bonus and this new job is like tons better than the last one. =)

I gtg now, I've got a packed December filled with fun-rows, wedding dinner, dinner and lunch with old friends that i have had little time to catch up with and i am going to my friend's Hens' night tonight (Really dunno what they are planning to do, but i think its gonna be just a simple dinner and drink.). To anyone reading this, please take care and see ya! =)

My Marathon

Ok, so i din go for the Standard Chartered Marathon this year. Anyway my knees are really getting quite bad even after 6 km at my usual speed of about 1/2 hour i am starting to like limp a bit after my runs. Guess its clear that my days of challenging myself to continousely improve on my 2.4 timings are numbered.

I woke up at about 5.45 a.m. this morning. Changed, had a little breakfast and had to head for Singapore Expo for my CFA paper. I slept at about 2 a.m. the night b 4 and after my morning coffee, i can feel that my head was feeling a bit... light. Something like a helium balloon, but i managed to make my way to the MRT and along the way i saw many people in their Standard Chartered running attire. Its sad i cannot join them this year. Last year i joined and i was late! My race starts at 7.30 and i woke up at 7.15 at home! Kenna sai! I still went anyway and completed my 10k.m. then i met Andrew and we decided to put all the stuff back with a nice breakfast at Plaza Sing Cosisting of eggs, coffee, toasts, Chai Tao Quay and Quay Chup! OMG! It was so damn good! This is what makes a marathon worth running! Haha. :P

My marathon this year was somewhat different. But still its 6 hours long and its really mentally draining and i do mean REALLY! The CFA paper consisted 2 parts one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Each consisting of 120 MCQ questions. A lot of people turned up and it was honestly quite scary. Now i am just glad that the whole fiasco is over. This is one marathon i hope i dun ever need to run again.

Now for my holiday plans... i will be spending 2 weeks holiday back with SAF! So SAD! : '(
First exams then more exams and work and now ICT! Haiz.. I am really busy and tired. Hope this incamp will be a good time for me to recharge and relax a little. Meanwhile all u pple out there take care and see you soon! I am really lookign forward to the coming fun row and the aftrermath of the row ( which is also to put back what we burned, which incidentally is also the best part of dragonboating too!). Take care and see ya!

Its never easy saying goodbye...

Its never easy saying goodbye to people close to you and its especially painful if its unexpected. One minute we see somone full of life's vigour and promises of a future limited to only how far he/she is willing to go, while in the next we will never see the person alive.... ever again. It is truly heart wrenching and almost impossible to accept.

Today is the Memorial for the 5 heros that gave their lives for the sport that they so passionately loved and for our country. My friend sent me an sms yesterday, asking me to go for the memorial if possible and reminding me to wear my life vest and to watch out for others too.... he said that he has lost enough friends and do not want to lose anymore of his friends. I thought that was really kind of him. Unfortunately i had to work today, so i cannot attend their Memorial, but i will pray that they be happy wherever they are now.

Here is lyrics of the Song called "Remember me this way" by Jordan Hill from the sound track of Casper. I really like the part where they mentioned that we know somone cannot stay, but because they have touched our hearts, there will always be apart of them that will stay forever with us. I will always remember the 5 heros each time i step into a dragonboat and remember how their passion, talent and smiles made a difference in the lives of many. Their love for the sport will live on in the dragonboat fraternity and their passion for life will resonate with all those that had the fortune of knowing them and certainly with their team mates who had the honour of rowing with them. In ending i would like to make a wish and hope that their families and friends will find happiness in the days to come despite all the pain. I dedicate this song to everyone in loving memory of the National Paddlers Chee Wei Cheng, Jeremy Goh, Stephen Loh, Poh Boon San and Reuben Kee.

Every now and then
We find a special friend
Who never lets us down
Who understands it all
Reaches out each time you fall
You're the best friend that I've found
I know you can't stay
A part of you will never ever go away
Your heart will stay
I'll make a wish for you
And hope it will come true
That life would just be kind
To such a gentle mind
If you lose your way
Think back on yesterday
Remember me this way
Remember me this way
I don't need eyes to see
The love you bring to me
No matter where I go
And I know that you'll be there
Forever more a part of me, you're everywhere
I'll always care
I'll make a wish for you
And hope it will come true
That life would just be kind
To such a gentle mind
If you lose your way
Think back on yesterday
Remember me this way
Remember me this way
And I'll be right behind your shoulder watching you
I'll be standing by your side in all you do
And I won't ever leave
As long as you believe
You just believe
I'll make a wish for you
And hope it will come true
That life would just be kind
To such a gentle mind
If you lose your way
Think back on yesterday
Remember me this way
Remember me this way

[ Lyrics provided by www.mp3lyrics.org ]

Some random thoughts related to Dragonboating.

Its been a rough week thus far, at work and at home ( trying to study for my coming Exam this Sunday) and it did not help that i kept thinking about the 5 dragonboaters that "moved on". I have been following the news about the 5 dragonboaters really closely and visting their facebooks, links and blogs about them online. I was moved by Reuben's beautiful music and read the words left behind by their loved ones. It was almost like i was trying to get to know them before the last traces of their existence fades away for good.

This is really hard to understand. When i used to see them at the pontoon at Kallang, it never occurred to me to go over to say hi or even give them a smile should they happen to look my way. I am begining not to understand myself, ever more so as i grow older. "Why so much emotions over people you hardly know?" i asked myself, but so far i have been unable to give myself a satisfactory answer.

Dragonboating was a sport i took up with the intention to just "keep the fats away", but the sport grew on me. I capitivated by the comaradrie that developed between members in the team, the common emotions we shared ---- the dissappointment of failures, the joy of success and the strength that we drew from each other. I never knew it was possible to feel this close to people that was not part of your family. I had never done competitive sports and the experience that dragonboating offered me was nothing less than magical. It was something to look forward to after a tough week at work and that was what kept me going for a long time, weekend after weekend. Only those who have experienced this for themselves can understand what this feeling embodies and what it means to be part of a dragonboat team. I guess this is the main reason why many in the national team was willing to go the distance for the sport and for the 5, they made the ultimate sacrafice in the name of the sport.

As with all good things, it will come to pass. I had to forgo the sport to persue my dreams and persuing them i am. If i say that i do not miss the days of rowing under the hot sun on Kallang river with my team mates then i would be lying. I met my friend in the gym a few months ago and he asked if i was still rowing, i said no and his reply was... "what a pity...." I asked why his answer was simply.... "Because its a pity you had to give up something you enjoyed doing." I was unable to say anything for a moment and for that moment there was this awkward slience amongst us. I snapped out and gave a answer... "Well, i can always pick it up again later in life.". It almost sounded defensive.

I am sure that someday i'll be back at Kallang and my paddle will taste the waters of Kallang again. Dragonboating has already become an integral part of me, something that will stick with me till the end of my days. While i am not sure when or how, but i will be back rowing again someday and rest assured i will be back for more races and fun. Dragonboating is no longer an activity "just to keep fats away", it has become a part of me, one that i know will grow to form a significant part of how i view my life in due time. Mean while... here's to everyone out there.... "I'll be back!" haha. :D

Blogging again?

I used to blog when i was in my university days but i lost interest amid all the work and hustle and bustle of my daily life. I figured it was more important chasing after my dreams than telling the whole world what i have been doing, or what i have done. Some call this being focused and goal-orientated but the recent event made me think twice... It made me think.... in my persuit of my dreams have i missed out the important things in life? Have i taken time out to admire the strength of the fragile flower growing by roadside? Have i taken time out to spend with my parents and family? Have i been spending time with who matters most in my life and have i been keeping contact with my friends that i hold so dear?

The recent Dragonboat accident in Cambodia has reminded me that there is no consistency in life and i would like to keep something behind or at least let my friends know what were my brief thoughts and actions should i meet with an unfortunate accident. Therefore i decided i should start blogging again.. maybe briefly, but it will be a place where i can post some of my thoughts and pictures of my life for my friends and hopefully that will reduce the distance amongst us.

Going back to the Dragonboat accident again... My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the 5 national rowers who sacraficed for the glory of our country. I do not know them personally but i have seen them many times at Kallang river and for the small dragonboat community, it is a great loss. I pray that their friends and families will find the strength to move on in life.. moving on to find happiness and hope... for i know those 5 would have wanted it to be so. Somone once told me... "After the pain and the tears, life still have to go on. We cannot change reality, but merely adjust our response to what has happened."

I pray for the 5, their families and their friends. Pray that they find happiness and the strength to smile again in the days to come. For with life, there will be hope and where there is hope... happiness is usually not too far away. Life MUST go on.
